How to Find the Right Therapist: A Guide for Starting Your Journey

Starting therapy is a brave and meaningful decision. Whether you’re seeking support for a specific issue or simply want to understand yourself better, the journey begins with one crucial step: finding the right therapist. With so many options available, it can feel overwhelming – but the connection you build with your therapist is one of the most important factors in your healing process.

Why the Therapeutic Relationship Matters

Research consistently shows that the relationship between you and your therapist is a strong predictor of positive outcomes. Feeling safe, understood, and not judged is more important than the type of therapy offered – whether it’s CBT, person-centred, or another modality. Therapy should feel like a partnership, not a one-sided analysis.

Signs You’ve Found the Right Therapist

  • You feel heard and understood.
  • They are warm and welcoming, whether online or in person.
  • You feel safe sharing even the most difficult topics.
  • They listen more than they talk and check in to ensure they’ve understood you.
  • You leave sessions feeling lighter and clearer, even if everything isn’t resolved.

Questions to Ask in Introductory Sessions

Many therapists offer free introductory sessions – take advantage of these to explore your options. Consider asking:

  • What type of counselling do you offer?
  • Is it suitable for the issue I’m facing, and do you have experience in this area?
  • How do you ensure therapy feels collaborative?
  • What happens if we don’t feel like the right fit?
  • Do you offer online or phone counselling?

Red Flags to Watch Out For

When you’re feeling vulnerable, it can be hard to spot warning signs. Be cautious if you experience:

  • Feeling judged, dismissed, or talked over.
  • A therapist who talks excessively about themselves.
  • Advice given without fully understanding your story.
  • Lack of transparency around fees, boundaries, or confidentiality.

Trust Your Instincts

Therapy should feel like a safe, collaborative space. It’s perfectly okay to try a few therapists before committing. Your comfort and trust are essential to making progress.

Of course, if you’re looking for someone to walk alongside you with warmth, compassion and understanding, I also offer a 20-minute free session. It’s enough time for you to decide if I’m a good fit for you.
